Exhibition “Dufy’s Paris”

The collective memory retains Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) for the dexterity of his stroke, the balance of his compositions, his talent as a colorist, his sense of synthesis and his monumental Electricity Fairy; and under the pen of the critics, to characterize his work, the words of charm, distinction, lightness, elegance, freshness have imposed themselves on the common sensitivity.

The exhibition follows in the footsteps of this young artist from Normandy who, getting off his train at the Gare Saint-Lazare, discovered the capital at the beginning of the 20th century and, from the top of the Butte Montmartre, the Parisian panorama that would not leave him until his death.

With this exhibition, the Musée de Montmartre aims to show and study the choice of Paris as a motif in the artist's work: a subject that, despite the many exhibitions dedicated to Raoul Dufy, has never been treated until now.

The exhibition is also a tribute to the artist who occupied one of the studios at 12 rue Cortot and who, from 1911 onwards, moved to 5 impasse Guelma, which he kept all his life: a place that saw the birth of a large number of masterpieces, some of which are included in the exhibition.

Organized according to a thematic path in ten sections, the exhibition aims at nothing more than to focus on this motif that is Paris and that accompanies Dufy introducing him in his most ambitious and experimental achievements. It also shows the fields that participated in his act of creation: painting, watercolor, woodcut, tapestry ...

To learn more about the Electricity Fairy, a monumental work by Dufy presented at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris:

On the occasion of the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques inaugurated in Paris in 1937, Raoul Dufy created a 600 m² fresco for the Electricity Pavilion.

For this commission, Dufy imagined a colorful gallery of 108 scientists that spread from Antiquity to the present day. The Electricity Fairy is now presented at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris.

The MAM invites you to rediscover this masterpiece thanks to tablets available in situ, as well as a dedicated website.
