During the 19th century, the landscape of Montmartre began to change. The <strong>mills<\/strong> stopped their activity and the <strong>vineyards<\/strong> slowly disappeared due to urbanisation. In 1860, <strong>Montmartre<\/strong> was annexed to the city of Paris. Artists started to move to Montmartre in 1870 and the cafes and cabarets multiplied in the 1880\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>What quickly came to characterise Montmartre in the eyes of everyone was this <strong>effervescent bohemian spirit<\/strong>, a creative energy. This spirit was also present in the artists\u2019 studios : <strong>12 Cortot<\/strong> witnessed the passage of several, most of whom lovingly painted their residence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-11872-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"siteorigin-panels-stretch panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-11872-2\" data-stretch-type=\"full\" ><div id=\"pgc-11872-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-11872-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div id=\"Atelierappartement\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-11872-2-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\"><font color=\"black\"><\/font><font face=\"playfair display\">Suzanne Valadon's recreated atelier-apartment<\/font><\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>In <strong>1912<\/strong> Suzanne Valadon, Maurice Utrillo et Andr\u00e9 Utter settled into their <strong>atelier-apartment<\/strong> and left a symbolic trace at 12 Cortot. They are named in memory of the impressionist painter who lived on-site between 1875 and 1877, where he painted several masterpieces including the famous le <em><strong>Bal du Moulin de la Galette<\/strong><\/em> (\u201cThe Moulin de la Galette Ball\u201d), <em><strong>La Balancoire<\/strong><\/em> (\u201cThe Swing\u201d), and <em><strong>Jardin de la rue Cortot<\/strong><\/em> (\u201cRue Cortot Garden\u201d).
